After the long drought, today was supposed to be the day that the rains came. However we only got a few spits so we were happy about that even if the farmer might not have been. Hopefully it will all come tomorrow.
Todays mototrial was held on Boltons farm on the Saddle Road near Ashhurst. Merv and I spent a few hours in the heat on Saturday setting out the eight sections on the hard dry banks and hills. Every peg was a struggle to get into the ground. Four sections were set in a patch of bush and included logs and tree roots and plenty of dry slippery leaf mould.
Fourteen riders turned up including a few from out of the area. Three from Wellington and one each from Hastings, Wanganui and Waverly although the later two are MOMCC members. A few of our regulars were away doing other things or suffering the ill effects of a nonstop flight across the globe.
Although I stated in the email sent out last week that this event was the first club champs round I was in fact wrong. Next month’s event is round one. Sorry about that.
So how did the day go? Mine didn’t fair too well after a small crash on lap two which left me with a few bruises so after that I was no threat at all to young Warrick George who was having some good rides. Although he had a few bad ones too, but not too many.
After some 17 years out of trials, Hastings rider Nigel Reid ventured down to the Manawatu where he used to be a regular visitor all those years ago. And the long layoff hasn’t affected his riding too much as he snuck home in front of our Tony Smith by the narrowest of margins of one clean ride in the Intermediate grade.. And this was Tony’s first ride for some six month’s too – well first on his trials bike. He has been VMX racing in between.
Chris Morrison from Wanganui is another rider who’s found his way back to trials after some 30 plus years away and enjoying it too. And having some good rides on his Sherco 290.
Once again the Clubman grade was dominated by Ixion MCC rider Ricky Winkle on his Ossa 280. Waverly dairy farmer Charlie Morrison (no relation to Chris as far as I’m aware) and Merv George fought for the minor placings with Merv being the loser this time.
New comer Tod Palenski rode his recently acquired early 80’s Fantic 156 to first place in the Social grade with Hannah Rushworth riding a Gas Gas 80 showing her mum Jane Bray how it’s done by finishing in runner up spot. It’s good to have the girls along at the mototrials and their riding is improving all the time.
See you all at the next MOMCC mototrial on April 21.
