Desert Storm Delivers The Promise

Posted: Tue 24 Apr 2007

We said that the 07 Storm would be a high quality experience for a small amount of people and it was just that. Numbers were halved from the 1900 riders who took part in the 06 event. And even though it rained again, the base and tracks held up and people had a good time.

On Saturday all 1000 riders were unleashed onto the 63km long Eastern loop which runs up beside the Rangipo Desert. To the relief of the riders and organizers the track held up well, but there were a few decent ruts forming and the whoop sections were getting bigger and bigger.

Saturday evening saw the addition of a new trail sprint race and the usual barrel race. John Sharland showed everyone how to stay fast and tidy in the barrel race and took the $500. After tea, showers, a bonfire and some DVD's most people hit their campsite beds and a few people partied till the early hours.

Sunday dawned overcast, but not raining so people lined up early to have a go at the unridden 53km Western trail that runs up beside the Rangataua forest. Initially all the tough optional loops including the Picnic table, Staircase and Duncan's loop were labeled Expert Only, but later in the day were given' normal' red arrow status for most people to have a go at. There were smiles all round as people returned from their first lap on the fresh track. For the super tough enduro nutters, the Challenge trail provided just that - a real challenge. Some of the hill climbs required even national enduro riders to give each other a push. At the other end of the riding scale, the Novice riders really enjoyed the addition of the flat 12km Novice loop close to the base.

Slowly the campsite emptied as people began their journeys home, some with a fair way to go. 3 riders made the trek from Australia and a group also journeyed from Oamaru in the far South. And then just as the last bike was leaving the base, the sun came out to greet us finally.
