2006 KR KIDS SECONDARY SCHOOLS MX CHAMPS

Joyriders at Manukau Citys Rainbows End amusement park were treated to an additional spectacle on Saturday May 7th as New Zealands largest one day Junior Motocross event roared into action right next door at the Superstage Site formerly used for the Propecia Rally of New Zealand.

The circuit spanned almost 2 kilometres of rolling grassy terrain right in the heart of Manukau City and with 300 motocross riders on bikes ranging from 250cc four strokes to 85cc two strokes, the track formed up quickly into a condition worthy of a European Motocross Grand Prix circuit.

With over 90 teams representing schools from Kaitaia to Masterton, the battle for the big teams trophy was the closest it has been in the 6 years the event has been running. Otumoetai College in Tauranga tied on points with St Peters School in Cambridge with the overall victory going to Otumoetai on a countback decided by the third placed rider, as both teams had riders who had taken two first place finishes and a second rider who had taken two second place finishes, so it was up to the third rider in the top two teams to decide who would win.

Whakatanes Trident High School fielded the largest and best organised team in the history of the event with 32 riders, taking 5th overall, while Tauranga Girls High made a significant impact, taking 11th overall with their team made up entirely of girls who raced against the boys in all their classes.
