Coppins ties for podium in Belgium.

New Zealand’s motocross star, Josh Coppins has raced to a consistent result on a technically demanding and re-vamped circuit in Neeroeteren, Belgium. Belgian fans turned out in their thousands to support local hero, Stefan Everts but Coppins was determined to keep his championship hopes alive which would turn out to be a great day’s racing.

“The Lizzard” was well up in the field as race one got underway however a slight mistake relegated the CAS Honda rider to sixth position. Coppins put his head down and concentrated and making good the ground he had lost. Everts had also made a mistake in the opening stages and was trying to catch the Kiwi and salvage a lost race. Coppins matched the Belgian’s lap times and as the race was coming to end, Coppins passed another Belgian, Steve Ramon for fourth position.

“I made a mistake in the whoops and it cost me some valuable time and positions. I wasn’t really riding relaxed but I still managed to catch up a little and pass Steve just before the end,” said Coppins.

Coppins grabbed the hole-shot in race two but lost the lead to teenager, Kevin Strijbos in the second turn. The Kiwi had to offer up a few more positions in the opening laps but then he settled into a rhythm to try and keep an eye on the leading pack. Coppins managed to pick off Strijbos to move into fourth but he could not make an impression on the leading trio. The top four positions never changed for almost three quarters of the race and Coppins crossed the finish line for another fourth position tying on points with the Belgian pair of Steve Ramon and Kevin Strijbos.

“I had a great start but that was about it. The first ten minutes were really terrible I and couldn’t find a rhythm. I wasn’t riding like I wanted to today although I’m happy with the consistency,” said Coppins.

The MX GP caravan moves to Uddevalla next week-end in Sweden for round eleven.
