Kiwi Rider man wins Qantas award

KIWI RIDER has reached the top step of the podium for journalism in this country. The magazine was among elite company at a black-tie function in Auckland in May when Andy McGechan was called to collect a Qantas award for excellence in journalism.

McGechan’s award-winning article was for the three-issue epic on New Zealand’s Isle of Man 2003 winner, Shaun Harris.
It was the first time McGechan had entered the Qantas contest, considered the Oscars of journalism in New Zealand.

“It was done pretty hastily too. It was a last-minute decision and I nearly missed the deadline,” McGechan confessed. “I’d never entered before but figured you’ve got to give these things a go.
“I didn’t know what or if I should be entering or really what articles to select for my portfolio. I consider it a huge honour for me and for Kiwi Rider and a credit too to the crew at the magazine who did such a wonderful job of displaying my words and photos. Thanks Nathan and Ross.”

McGechan could not personally be at the awards ceremony because he was rostered for work at his main employer, The Daily News newspaper in New Plymouth, where he works as a sub-editor.
