Strong finish for Watts at GNCC Rd. 4:

Team KTM Offroad racer Shane Watts produced a strong ride at round 4 of the prestigous GNCC offroad series held in Morganton, North Carolina on the weekend.

Conducted in perfect conditions, Watts started the 6 lap, 3 hour race at the tailend of the 25 rider Pro class and then charged his way through to the lead pack of 4 riders by the beginning of the second lap.

\"I got a crappy start and had to work my way forward. I was actually feeling awesome on the bike and was able to reel in the lead pack easily. At the start of the third lap I had to decide whether I\'d continue charging and lead the race or if I\'d just tag along with the other four riders and conserve my energy for a charge at the finish. Because of some serious concern over my level of fitness, due to my recent injuries hampering my training schedule, I decided to just hang back and follow.
That was a big mistake! Just before the half way point fuel stop I got baulked by a large group of lapped riders and lost 30 seconds to my competitors. After the refuel those guys pinned it and I was charging as hard as I could but could only get within 10-15 seconds of them before getting dogged by more lappers. It was so frustrating.\"

\"The fifth lap saw me have 3 big crashes, just trying that little bit too hard. Once the last lap began I was comfortably in 5th positon but then had one final wipeout into a very solid tree about a mile in. The impact loosened the rear brake master cylinder bolts and by the two mile mark they had fallen out. It was a long and slow lap, especially on the steep downhills, to the finish. I was just a sitting duck out there for the guys behind me. I was lucky to have only two riders pass me, one of them only a half mile from the checkers. There was nothing I could do.\"

\"My fitness was really good, so now that I have no doubts about it, I\'ll be charging the whole race now. I\'m not making yesterday\'s tactical mistake again.\"

This coming weekend has Watts racing in a Florida Championship Hare Scramble race followed by the next round of the GNCC in Cross Anchor, South Carolina.
