SUPERCROSS NATIONALS - BURKHART AND KING SHARE HONOURS:

At the halfway point in the National Supercross 250cc, Darryll King holds a one point lead over Mason Phillips. This after round two of the four series was held at Tokoroa on Saturday night.

Darryll King, known as “DK”, used speed, skill and some sage to edge out the youthful Phillips on overall points. King has 19 New Zealand titles to his name but hasn’t added to that for two years. A model of consistency, he has set the benchmark in New Zealand for his both riding and sportsmanship over the last decade.

Phillips (Te Puke) banked points for two wins on Saturday night in front of 4,000 people. The nineteen year old is a member of the Motorcycling New Zealand High Performance Squad, through the programme he has recently had individual clinics with Ben Townley. He also rides for the same team as Darryll King so he keeps good company.

“DK” is also in a one point cliffhanger in the 125’s, although in this class he is in the slipstream of Masterton’s Jonathan Burkhart. Burkhart won the first and third races on Saturday with Scott Columb (Queenstown) winning the middle leg. Columb, another High Performance Squader, holds third place in the league.

The series goes into retreat for a month, the next round is in Wellington on February 21.
