Tokoroa hosts Supercross Battle:

With one round down and three to go, the NZ Supercross Championship battle heads to Tokoroa, the home of Supercross on Saturday 17 January.

Round one in Nelson saw former World #2 Josh Coppins assert himself narrowly over Yamaha rider Darryll King. Coppins is now off to contest the World 250cc MX Championship based in Europe and will not contest any further National SX rounds.

Battling for the lesser placings have been Mason Phillips, Luke Burkhart and Scott Columb. Phillips has recently switched from Honda to ride for Darryll King’s CDR Yamaha team. Columb provides Suzuki’s main hope for a title. Both Columb and Phillips are in the MNZ High Performance Programme.

There is renewed interest in the NZ Supercross series with a higher caliber of rider competing making for close racing up front. The main omission for 2004 is Shayne King, the current NZ SX 250cc champ.

But is won’t just be rival riders to worry about, because the Tokoroa circuit will demand an equal amount of attention. Featuring double jumps, triple jumps, table tops, a rhythm section and stutters, the condensed track will push the skills and courage of the riders to the limit.

The Supercross racers will be getting some big air over the many jumps on the course, but it will be the Freestyle Motocross riders who really take to the sky. Tokoroa’s own Nick Franklin is joining with Palmy FMX teammate Luke Price of Tauranga to put on a massive FMX demo three times during the night. Moves like Rock Solids, Superman seat grabs, 9 O\'clocks, Indian Airs and heel clickers are sure to win the approval of the 4000 strong crowd expected. Franklin, the reigning Vodafone X Air champ, is fresh from a World wide FMX campaign where he was regularly in the top 3-4 placings.
