The Suzuki SummerCross:

Posted: Fri 20 Dec 2002

World class riders Darryll and Shayne King are confirmed competitors for the Suzuki Summercross Motocross event 28-29 December 2002 at Whakatane.

Darryll (known as ‘DK’ was the legend of the 2001 Summercross event dominating the comp over his younger brothers and Australian Red Bull Star Craig Anderson.

Local lad Cody Cooper will be out to dominate the event fresh from winning the Oceania 125cc event held recently in Wellington. The Opotiki Honda rider will be focusing on the 125 cc class.

The Motocross circuit is full of bumps, berms and jumps that test the nerve and fitness of all the riders. Up to 40 riders charge in the narrow first turn hoping to emerge still upright and in the lead.

But it’s the Freestyle Motocross jumpers who lay claim to the biggest air over the 23 metre ramp to ramp jump they crank over three times a day. Moves like Tsunamis, nothings, superman seat grabs and rock solids look just as crazy as they sound. Defending Summercross FMX Champ Tim Watson is traveling up from Wellington to show off his trademark Nac Nac… The main competition to Watson is likely to be Suzuki’s Nick Franklin, the current Vodafone X Air champion. Fresh from competing in the tough Australian FMX circuit, Franklin will be hard to beat.

Booming 4 strokes are one of the main attractions on Saturday. An all in four stroke class will see bikes from 250cc to 540 cc cranking around the track, bouncing off the berms and each other.

Suzuki star Cam Negus is keen to jump on a special DRZ 430 to take the 4 stroke glory Saturday and is campaigning the National 125cc and National 250cc classes on Sunday – a big effort for the Rotorua racer.

Mixing it up with the top guns are another 500 riders who compete in support classes including Minis, Juniors, Experts and Veterans. Throw in the 4000 spectators expected and you have a great atmosphere.

And for those seeking audio entertainment, then look to the Red Bull Hummer to pump out fat sounds all weekend. A DJ will be mixing the music in the American built 4WD vehicle.

The entertainment will be hard core and non stop with races blasting off every 15 minutes. After each round of Motocross the FMX crew launch into orbit.
