21 October - Letter From Niki:

Hi there everyone.
Sorry this is late but I have a good excuse this time! Yesterday I went to Philip Island Grand Prix which is more fun than writing e-mails to you.
Lots of people doubted that I could get through the day but I showed them all up as usual! I had a great day yesterday watching the grand prix from the Kamasaki Corporate Box.

It was my first grand prix and I was completely blown away by the speed. The day also gave me an opportunity to catch up with some of the Kawasaki hierarchy and meet some of the bosses from Japan. I also spent a good time talking to Andrew Pitt the Kawasaki rider of the new moto GP bike.

It was interesting talking to him and relating with him about being a factory rider in a different discipline. But the best part was meeting the umbrella girl Nicky. When you are in a wheelchair everyone is nice to you even the pretty ones!

The day was a good test for me and my family and shows how far I have come in the last nine weeks. It also shows how far I have to go with car transfers and other activities which still prove a challenge.

Everyday the main topic of the people here is when I can travel back to N.Z. The answer to this question is that nobody knows. Physically I am now able but there is an impending strike in hospitals in N.Z. which may delay my departure. I will transfer to Middlemore Hospital and then to the Otara Spinal Unit. My Australian specialist says that in the Australian Rehab System I would be back in the community in six weeks.

We don't know how long the N.Z. system will keep me in but I'm still hopeful of being home for Xmas. Dad came over last thursday and it was really great having him here for the weekend. It was a bit like old times off to the motorbike racing. He says that he is going to Taupo at Labour Weekend, so it will be a bit easier than normal for him not having a rider to worry about!

I hope this email finds you all fit and well and I am looking forward to being home and seeing you all in the not too distant future.
Thanks for your continued support.
Niki.
