For the last 25 years or so Silver-Bullet (mostly Jane, Hannah, and myself, although a cast of thousands have contributed over the years) have made a habit of turning up at various motorcycle events to help collate results.
Although Silver-Bullet is a limited liability company with audited accounts this service is provided on a volunteer basis.
Money often changes hands but this has always been on the basis of a contribution towards costs, rather than a fee (although GST is paid on any money received). In fact, I'm embarrassed to say that people are very generous. Often I feel they overpay for what we do.
When our van (with 1,000,000km) was written off a few years ago some people organised another van so that we could still attend events.
But, over the last few years, costs have gone up and things have continued to break. A few weeks ago our beloved honda generator sucked a kūmara and our Ezi-ups are about as watertight as a kitchen colander. And, unfortunately, last year the van needed repairs that sucked all the spare cash from the couches.
In the meantime, all the other costs keep right on costing. Printers, printer cartridges, stationary, riders numbers, tablets, oil changes, tyres, etc.
Some people have advised that we should put Silver-Bullet on a firmer footing by charging more for this and that but life is just too short for that sort of carry on. And, even if we fully prostituted ourselves, we might cover costs but we wouldn't cover time. And we'd probably have to do more, and we'd feel dirty as we shamelessly chased the filthy lucre. Truth is.... you couldn't pay us to do what we doing so it's silly to even try. (If it was a job I'd probably quit.)
But we are unable to fund silver-bullet activities at this current level. We still want to go to events and piddle-paddle around with bits of software. We need an injection of cash to enable this leaky ship to keep sailing a little longer. At the moment the same old people are popping out of the woodwork but that doesn't seem particularly fair to me
The proposition is that maybe there are some OTHER people out there who could afford a little. Obviously, if $50 is a lot of money to you, you should hang onto it. There is no compunction; Silver-Bullet has been only too happy to turn up in the past. This is about the future.
So... if you regularly list events on Silver-Bullet, or appreciate the odd printout, or you prefer humans over transponders, or you want to support the sport, or your wads of cash just keep sliding off the pile on your wheelbarrow, or you just enjoy seeing us out there freezing and wet, then consider entering this 'Virtual Event.' Travel expenses are $ZERO, bike maintenance is optional (as is a bike), risk of injury is low, and the weather is a non-issue. This will be the CHEAPEST and EASIEST ride you'll never do. GUARANTEED!
